Upgrading database hard drive to SSD - need help

Postby hohoho » Thu Dec 20, 2012 8:35 am

I have postgres on my mechanical hard drive letter 'E'

I have just purchased a Plextor SSD, I am wish to put my dbases on this obv.

1.Postgres is install on drive 'E' in fold 'Postgres9win7' folder. Can I just 'drag' and copy this folder across the SSD or do I need to use a backup program?

2.Obviously my dbase is on drive E. I will need to make the SSD drive E.

- I am suggesting I STOP POSTGRES from within PT4.

- Close PT4.

- go to DISK MANAGEMENT and change drive 'E' mechanical hard disk to say drive 'Z'

- go to DISK MANAGEMENT and change SSD to drive 'E'

- restart postgres

Please advise so I don't make a total mess of this.

Thanks.

The easiest and safest thing to do is to follow these steps:

(1) Backup your databases in PT3 via File -> Backup.

(2) Uninstall PostgreSQL.

(3) Reinstall PostgreSQL on the new SSD (whatever drive it's on).

(4) Start up PT3 and restore that backup file.

(5) Delete the old postgres folder on the other drive once you can confirm that the new SSD is working properly.

Why can't I just clone the E mechanical drive with postgres then alter the drive letters so the SSD is now drive E?

BTW it's PT4 I'm using. I've tried PT3 backup and it's a joke, 1 out of 10 dbases restored. Rest gave errors.

I can't guarantee that everything will work properly in that case.

Our backup system should not be producing errors like that regardless - did you open a support ticket for your backup problems?

I found this article on how to move postgres to a new drive, seems u just copy it over.

http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/368/Move+Database+to+Another+Hard+Drive+or+Partition

as for backups, it was PT3 dbases backed up, import to pt4. I gave up and made new ones imported hhs

PT3 backups only work with PT3 and PT4 backups only work with PT4 but the backups do import properly when used in the proper version of PokerTracker and in a fraction of the time that it takes to import hands.
