system requirements of PostgreSQL versus PT3

Postby Russelldust » Sun Jan 18, 2009 7:12 pm

I have successfully managed to get PT3 working over my network. So, PostgreSQL runs on a dedicated server (I'm using a Windows XP Professional system), and PokerTracker runs on a separate client (my new Windows Vista Business system).

Now, you specify certain system requirements for PT3 here. However since the workload is shared between two PCs, what are the requirements/recommendations for the PostgreSQL server, and what are the requirements/recommendations for the PokerTracker client?

I have noticed for example that although you say PokerTracker demands 1+ GB of RAM, according to Task Manager PokerTracker itself only seems to use 150-200 MB. Is it PostgreSQL, rather than PT, that needs lots of memory to work efficiently?

Also you specify that PT3 is demanding on the system's hard disk, but I'm guessing this is also primarily at the server side. Basically can I think of the PT3 app as a fairly 'thin client' and therefore I should set up a beast of a server to provide maximum performance?

Finally: will latency over my home LAN be an issue, or is communication between PT and PostgreSQL unlikely to be a bottleneck?

I wonder if you could provide some recommendations please, to save me some trial and error. Many thanks!

I can't really give you any specific numbers, but you're right that the postgres server will be doing most of the hard disk work. Both sides will require memory, though. As always, the more the better - it will work with less but will be significantly slower.
There is a lot of communication between PT3 and the postgres server but I would not expect a home network to cause any problem - we have plenty of people using networked databases.
