Coping databases from one PC to another

Postby Tukingz_KK » Sun Feb 08, 2009 10:51 am

Hi,

Sorry, the answer to my question might be in your forum, I just don’t seem to be able to find it.

I am using PokerTracker3 on a desktop and a notebook. I do not have a shared network or an exchangeable disk. After playing online poker, I would like to move my database files from the PC I was using to the other PC, so that the databases on both PC's are exactly the same again.

What exact folder do I have to copy?

(I have been trying to make backups on one PC and recover them on the other PC. For some reason it refuses to import the new files, returning an error code (1). The only option, I figured out so far, is to make a complete new database and import to there. A lot of hassle!)

Thanks!

You can't just copy physical files in the same way; PostgreSQL databases consist of many small files in order to improve performance.

You can export your hands from a PT3 database by clicking Database --> Database Management --> Export and that will export your hands from the PT3 database to the directory you choose. Take the hands to the new machine and use the manual import to import them there and you'll have all of your hands in your new database.

Tried it. It seems to work, but it messes up the CCPF. Other stats seem to be right.

Hi,

I am in the same boat as well (ie: use both a desktop and a laptop and need to keep both completely up to date).

The only issue I have found with exporting and manual importing of hands is it does not copy across Player Notes.

I also tried Backing up and restoring but it it appears that if there is existing data in the DB you have to delete the old database and recreate it before I can complete the restore. Is this correct.

In the end I am looking for a simple method of keeping my laptop and Desktop up synchronized (including player notes). What do you recommend?

Export/import of notes between databases has been requested before and I hope it will be added before too long, but I don't know when.
I believe that restoring a database has to be done into an empty DB, yes, although there may be some way of merging, I'm not sure. I'm sure one of the postgres experts on here will tell you whether it's possible.

When you restore a database from backup it does overwrite the data currently housed in that database; it's just the way PostgreSQL does things and it's not something we can control.

For a laptop & desktop setup the easiest thing will probably be to just network your database and only keep one actual database around. If you keep it on your desktop and always keep your desktop on it should work well. The only issue would be if you were away from your home you might need to keep note of your external IP address to change PT3's settings while you're away (and make sure port 5432 is accessible through any hardware firewall you have).

Please see this post for more on setting up your database that way.

Another option is to put your database on an external drive and just swap the drive's location. You can find a tutorial for that setup in this post.
