cluster, vacuum, analyze with a solid state disk?

Postby SaiYeN » Thu Mar 05, 2009 9:23 pm

Isn't cluster similar to defrag? i know its not necessary to defrag SSDs, and doing it will reduce the lifetime of the drive. So i shouldn't cluster with a SSD? what about vacuum and analyze? Are any of these necessary?

Cluster is similar but not exact, the way a PostgreSQL database is built, the actual data is split up over many files. When you cluster it reorganizes the data within those files. So, for example, data for a certain player might have been split over 6 files before and the Cluster gets it down to just 1 file. Depending on the block size of your disk, clustering could save some time, but not nearly as much as it would on a traditional hard drive.

Vacuuming reclaims empty space in the database (if you purged, for example), and should still be performed.

Analyzing goes through your database and figures out the best way to run a query so that PT3's queries will give you your results faster and should still be performed.

Updating Cache is also a very good idea, on occasion, as it builds a cache table in the database that has all of the raw data for your statistics columns, so that PT3 can give you the stat data in the HUD much faster.
