Cant connect to psql database

Postby bosh » Sat Jun 07, 2008 1:27 pm

I had installed postsql previously and when i tried to start pt3 it came up with a box with the server, user and port filled in, but the password field was blank. I tried every password i normally use and it came up with unable to connect ot database. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it would not let me create a new user so now im kinda stuck. Any help would be great.

can you afford to start from scratch and annihilate your postgres db?

if not, back it up with the native pgadmin GUI

then, delete the postgres folder and sub-folders from c:\program files

net user postgres /delete from a dos command prompt

re-install the latest full PT3 with postgres 8.3 bundle

In PT2 you can check whether you are using postgres databases by using the Maintain Database Names menu option (File menu) and the type of each DB is listed there.

yukkkk,

i am very new to the PT app but know a fair bit about postgres...

so you have PT2 & a beta of PT3 on the same PC?

i believe PT2 could be Access or postgres; is your PT2 database Access or postgres?

NB you should have these backed off in any case - best method is the database itself and the raw HH's so you can re-populate if the integrity of the db backup is compromised...

if your PT2 database is safe and backed up, i would assume you can safely wack the postgres folders and user, then re-install the PT3 with postgres 8.3, which should set up an empty 8.3 structure with "dbpass" as the password; and either play with that, or import and populate from the PT2 db or backup.

the only thing that worries me here, is if there's some connection between the PT2 & PT3 postgres such that wacking the postgres will compromise your valuable PT2 data...

Disclaimer: I would hang off on that until you can get an authoritative answer from the PT postgres moderator...

If the PT2 database(s) is Access (sounds like you didn't install postgres until you started with PT3?) then there should be no issue removing postgres. As Susan/Keggler says, though, make sure you backup your PT2 databases before doing anything - you back them up regularly anyway, though, right!?
