Problems installing postgreSQL

Postby hackett » Tue Jun 10, 2008 5:45 pm

Hi,

i had PT£ on my laptop when it died.

I have now had my laptop returned with a new hard drive and therefore downloaded PT3 again today.

Problem i have is when i am installing postgreSQl it seems to almost install then i get the error message "Service 'PostgreSQL Database server 8.3'(pgsql-8.3) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services"

I have no idea what this means or how to rectify this.

Not sure if i am being completley retarded but i right click on PT3 to run as administrator there is no password?????

Any help is much appreciated.

Alan.

As it was a new hard drive i downloaded PT3 with Postgres, exactly as i had done before the hard drive died.

I thought it was bets to download it with postgre???

did you install postgres as an administraor?

has the user you're running under got admin privileges?

if yes to both, then, is the postgres service stuck in limbo trying to start?

if i assume this is the case, halt the postgres service manually for now, launch procmon from sysinternals), restart the postgres service, make a note of the postgres process ID (PID) from windows task manager, filter the procmon to this PID, scroll down to the bottom and look for any folders/registry keys this PID is trying to access.

the path and result columns in procmon should give you the clue as to the offending item...

if it turns out to be the path of a completely different app, this is the culprit that's holding the lock that's preventing postgres from starting - that app needs to be disabled, uninstalled or updated so it does not conflict with the postgres service.

Thanks for your help but is there any chance you could talk me through that in layman's terms?

There's a more detailed explanation already written here:
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=7179&p=33158#p33111

Does that help?
